Four dishes and one soup is steeped in history during the time of the first emperor of the Ming Dynasty. A visionary in his time, he realized the decadent lifestyle of his court officials and decided on the need to end the indulgence through an official banquet where he served only four dishes and one soup.
Each dish and the soup had significance in meaning towards impartiality and anti corruption of the officials to the people and this has since been a stalwart practice of many homes in how they dine.
